5.0 out of 5 starsThis book will have you living through it.

December 16, 2017

Format: Kindle Edition

I received an ARC copy to read and review. I gave this a 5 star because Jon Halfhide managed to tell this story in an very involved way. It isn't a fun read but brings to live the reality of it all. Yes there is a bit of romance but mostly it is the portrayal of a German soldier. Not the usual way that we see an SS Officer but a patriot who loves his country and is heartbroken when he realize what is happening. It also show the problems after the war that a relationship between German and Englishmen was neither accepted in Germany or in England. Some of these feeling of resentment where still present in other previous occupied country 20 years after the war. What happened in Germany should always be remembered. How easy it was to go from anti Jewish and Gypsies sentiment to these camps of exterminations.

4.0 out of 5 starsMoving Story of Courage

May 24, 2018

Format: Kindle Edition

This is the story of Karl Wulf a German SS officer who losses faith in his mission and becomes hope for those trying to escape the atrocities of Nazi Germany. It's a beautifully written story of soul searching and personal growth. After serving a short time at Sobibor concentration camp Wulf realizes he's been fighting for a cause he doesn't believe in. Witnessing first hand the pure hell on earth that was Sobibor Wulf is moved to do the unthinkable, stage the escape of four Jews he's become close to. He finds an unlikely cohort within the guards of the camp. Leaving Sobibor behind he continues on this new personal mission in France. While in France Wulf hears about the D-Day invasion soon to happen. Still feeling a loyalty to country he requests a transfer to the German front. Soon after arriving he's gravely wounded and taken to a British field hospital where he falls in love with a British nurse. After being sent to a prisoner of war camp in England Wulf perservers and their love story continues. I really enjoyed this book. It is a senario that I'm sure happened often but is little told because of the massive atrocities perpetrated by Hitler on those he considered undesirables. It shows that among all the inhumanity that was Nazi Germany some Germans had the strength and bravery to reject the "final solution" and do what they could to resist. I highly recommend this book. It's a fast and easy read. It read it in less than six hours. It is a moving story about standing up for your beliefs no matter what the personal cost.

4.0 out of 5 starsA heartfelt read

August 24, 2018

Format: Kindle Edition

On Either Side was a heartfelt read about war and love. I enjoyed reading this book. Karl Wulf is a strong character with great empathy. He struggles with his duty to the fuhrer and the fatherland after first hand witnessing the atrocity of an internment camp in Poland. I loved when Karl met Coco Chanel. The ending was both triumphant and sad. Here are two of my favorite passages in the book, one from Coco Chanel to Karl, the other a quote from J. Scott Fitzgerald. I will continue with On Either Side Part 2. "My darling courageous and beautiful young German, a brave smile of sincerity grew on her lips, she knew the risks, of course I'll help you."-Coco Chanel "Suddenly she realized that what she was regretting was not the lost part but the lost future, not what had been but what would never be."-J. Scott Fitzgerald I give On Either Side 4 stars for its heartfelt read. I would recommend this book to everyone.

5.0 out of 5 starsA Different Kind of HEA

July 29, 2018

Format: Kindle Edition

This is a book with multiple stories following the life of Karl Wulf, an SS officer. Any one of these stories could easily be a separate book or novella as Karl lived an eventful life. Karl is the embodiment of a good person caught in a hellish situation. I admired him for doing what he could, putting his life at risk but not in a reckless, suicidal way. Even though the path of Karl and Brenda’s true love did not run smoothly, they persevered through many challenges. This may be a SPOILER. I was disappointed to find, once again, that true love does not always conquer all. Among other things, this book is about paths taken and paths not taken and the sorrow that can follow for the rest of one’s life depending upon the choices made. Brenda’s HAE would not work for me, yet hope in a hereafter where you are reunited with loved ones must be comforting.

5.0 out of 5 starsBeautifully heartbreaking

November 15, 2017

Format: Kindle Edition

This book was beyond difficult for me to read, and has left me searching for the right words to describe how important this heartbreaking story is. Jon Halfhide has intricately woven together the images to bring these characters to life in an absolutely breathtaking way. While the subject matter takes an up close look at one SS soldier's part in WWII, the humanity beyond the dates that often gets lost in high school history comes through loud and clear here! This was obviously a labor of love. I'll be rereading Karl's story and passing it on. ARC for an honest review

4.0 out of 5 starsUnique, and Heartbreaking

December 15, 2017

Format: Kindle Edition

This is the story that isn't told often, the story of the German soldier with a love for his country, and yet not the blind hatred that one usually associates with Nazis. It's a glance at the other side of The War, and a soldier has to come to terms with the atrocities that the men he trusted had sanctioned. It is harsh in its truth, and discusses some truly gruesome crimes against humanity, through the eyes of a German soldier.

5.0 out of 5 starsFantastic, touching story.

February 14, 2018

This is an incredible, distressing, touching story, and such an important perspective to be shared. I was moved beyond words reading this book, which was written so well. It's taken a while for me to write my review as I really found it difficult to come to terms with this story. An absolute must-read.
